O Fantasma da Máquina (The Ghost in the Machine) – ultimo post (last part)

This week I read something you'd like to share with you in this book by Arthur Koestler, in the chapter "Evolution: Theme and Variations."

At first the chapter discusses how the orthodox theory of evolution (neo-Darwinian) tries to explain all evolutionary change by random mutations and recombinations of genes, most of them being harmful to humans, and a small portion would be beneficial and be perpetuated by NATURAL SELECTION. With this, it is understood that the changes caused by inherited mutation has nothing to do with the adaptive needs of the animal, and can change you physically and in "any direction", or variations produced by pure luck.

To refute this argument - the evolution of an ad hoc and accidental - Koestler describes as an example the Giant Panda, which has on its front arms over a sixth finger, which is very much on purpose to manipulate the bamboo shoots that are its main food. This extra finger would be just a useless appendage if not for the appropriate muscles and nerves to move them. The possibility that, among all mutations "random", those who produced the bones, muscles and nerves -3 ADDITIONAL VARIABLES - had occurred independently in the same population are infinitely small.

If with 3 simultaneous "accidental" variations in a same specie likely is an absurd, imagine a case with 20 VARIABLES, which we seek scientific explanations, we find instead a MIRACLE.

This applies to the conquest of dry land by vertebrates, which began with the evolution of reptiles from a primitive amphibian form: amphibians lay their eggs in water, while the reptiles lay them on dry land, and thus became free to roam the continents. But it turns out that non-native reptiles, in the egg, still needed water under risk of dry well before birth. It also needed food (amphibians are hatched as larvae that prove themselves, while the reptiles hatch fully developed). Behold, a reptile's egg contains a huge gem that serves as food, and lots of albumin (egg white), to provide water.

As If nothing else matter, the eggwhite need to be contained so as not to suffer evaporation, and here comes the leathery shell or limestone material, such as packaging evolution. Moreover, because of the hard shell, the reptilian embryo could not get rid of their excretion product - the amphibian embryo has all the pond for this purpose - and here it comes a kind of vesicle (allantoic). The hard shell has kept him from the inside out, and evolution once again provides It with a tooth turned into a kind of "can opener" (snakes and lizards) while others have a lump near the tip of their beaks (birds).

These examples show only one aspect of the evolution of reptiles. We can describe many other countless changes of structure and behavior essential to make viable the new creatures: "... The storage of the liquid egg does not make sense without the shell. The shell would be useless and even deadly without the allantoic (vesicle) and the can opener. Each change alone would be considered detrimental to the survival and work... ".

Later Arthur allows the orthodox theory defenders to argue with experiments with fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster), which for a short life cycle is the favorite animal of geneticists to prove the theory of evolution. They are excited to reprogram a gene in the four pairs of chromosomes of the species and produce, in isolation, a change in the quality change in eye color, distribution of bristles on the body... They only forgot that, causing an isolated mutation (atomistic vision), created harmful changes to the species, ie, had no relevance to the central problem of the evolutionary process that requires simultaneous changes in all factors that affect the structure and functioning of a complex organ.
Koestler termina o capítulo criticando a FILOSOFIA MECANICISTA no campo da biologia e da genética.

Koestler ends chapter criticizing the mechanical philosophy in the field of biology and genetics.

The reason I write about this book is because I was surprised at the author's clear thinking on various subjects, even being a book written so long ago.
