                Esta mulher nasceu no Quênia em 1940 e faleceu em 25 de setembro de 2011. Foi professora e ativista política do meio-ambiente, e a primeira mulher africana a receber o Nobel da Paz, em 2004.

                This woman was born in Kenya in 1940 and died on September 25, 2011. Was a teacher and political activist of the environment, and the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.

                Sua luta começa na infância, quando ela deixa seu pai no interior para ir até a cidade grande com sua mãe para continuar seus estudos. Em 1959 segue com mais 300 quenianos para os Estados Unidos por ter ganhado uma bolsa de estudo da Fundação Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. E lá conclui seu bacharelado em biologia.

                Her struggle begins in childhood, when she leaves her father to go inside to the big city with her mother to continue her studies. In 1959, following over 300 Kenyans to the United States to have won a scholarship from the Foundation Joseph P. Kennedy Jr.  And there concludes her bachelor's degree in biology.

                Em 1966, obtém o mestrado em biologia pela Universidade de Pittsburgh, em 1971 recebe o seu doutorado em anatomia na Universidade de Nairóbi e em 2002, foi eleita membro do Parlamento queniano.

                In 1966 she obtained a master's degree in biology from the University of Pittsburgh, in 1971 received her doctorate in anatomy at the University of Nairobi and in 2002 was elected member of the Kenyan Parliament.

                Mas o que mais chama a atenção, e é a razão pela qual escrevo sobre ela aqui, é o motivo pelo qual ela recebeu o Nobel da Paz em 2004: Wangari ficou conhecida pela sua luta na conservação das florestas e do meio ambiente. Já na década de 1970, ela fundou o movimento do Cinturão Verde Pan-africano (Pan-African Green Belt Network), no Quênia, em uma iniciativa que plantou 30 milhões de árvores.

                No entendimento desta mulher, a devastação das florestas estava intimamente ligada ao aumento da miséria em seu país e nos demais países ao redor.                 In the opinion of this woman, the devastation of forests was closely linked to increased poverty in their country and in other countries around.                 Faz algum tempo que não posto nada na seção “abnegados”, pois não tive nenhuma inspiração.

                Mas como a principal motivação deste blog é falarmos sobre pessoas que se dedicam a ajudar os mais necessitados, então por que não falarmos de um grupo de pessoas que desde ha muito tempo tem feito a diferença para a vida de milhares de pessoas no estado de São Paulo?

                Hoje, após 60 anos de atividade, há diversas casas que atendem principalmente deficientes mentais (com problemas físicos associados ou não), desde os mais leves aos mais graves, seja com acompanhamento dos familiares ou os que foram abandonados.

                Hoje há mais de 1400 atendidos diariamente em suas instalações, dos quais cerca de 600 nas instalações de longa permanência – para toda a vida – sendo que os demais em regime ambulatorial.

Neste caso, a obra foi perpetuada tanto pelos próprios voluntários como por instituições que acreditaram na seriedade e viram os frutos sendo colhido dia a dia.

                The dream of every volunteer who starts a job like this is that the work in which he serves with the heart may be perpetuated after his / her death, and it isn’t always the case. Irena Sendler – O Anjo do Gueto de Varsóvia (The Angel of the Warsaw Ghetto)

            Na minha busca por abnegados, sempre me deparo com alguém que arriscou a própria vida para salvar outras vidas no período do Holocausto.

            In my quest for selfless people, I always find someone who risked his or her life to save other lives during the Holocaust.

            Irena Sendler, nascida em 1910 na Polônia, tem em sua conta mais de 2500 vidas salvas entre 1939 e 1943, quando trabalhou como enfermeira em Varsóvia, atuando diretamente nos guetos e levando medicamentos, comida, roupas e até dinheiro, contrariando o regime nazista.

            Irena Sendler, born in 1910 in Poland, has in her account more than 2500 lives saved between 1939 and 1943, when she worked as a nurse in Warsaw, acting directly in the ghettos and taking medicines, food, clothing and even money to the jewish families, against the Nazi regime.

            Mas o que mais impressiona é o risco que ela se determinou a correr quando, sabendo que mais cedo ou mais tarde, todos ali seriam incinerados, começou a tirar as crianças do local, com o consentimento dos parentes.

            But what impresses me most is the risk that she determined to run when, knowing that sooner or later, everyone there would be incinerated, she began to take local children out of the ghetto, with the consent of relatives.

            Ela tentava persuadir os pais ou avos a permitirem que ela retirasse os pequenos em ambulâncias, dizendo que eles tinham contraído tifo, e posteriormente até mesmo em sacos, cestos de lixo, caixas de ferramentas, carregamentos de mercadorias, sacas de batatas e caixões.

            She tried to persuade their parents or grandparents to allow her to withdraw them in the ambulance, saying they had contracted typhus for the nazis, and later even in bags, garbage bins, tool boxes, shipments of goods, sacks of potatoes and coffins.

            Quando os pais ou parentes não deixavam que ela os levasse para fora do gueto, por motivo óbvio, muitas vezes ela retornava para tentar persuadi-los, e constatava que todos na casa já tinham sido enviados para as câmaras de gás nos campos de extermínio.

            When parents or relatives didn’t let her take them out of the ghetto, for obvious reason, she often returned to try to persuade them, and almost always noted that everyone in the house had already been sent to the gas chambers in extermination camps.

            Para conservar o histórico familiar das crianças salvas, ela montou um arquivo para cada uma delas com nome original das crianças, nome dos pais e suas novas identidades.

            To preserve the family history of the rescued children, she set up a file for each one with the original name of children, parents' names and their new identities.

            Este trabalho durou até 20 de Outubro de 1943,quando Irena Sendler foi presa pela Gestapo e levada para a prisão de Pawiak onde teve suas pernas e pés quebrados pelos nazistas em busca da confissão sobre o paradeiro das crianças salvas e suas verdadeiras identidades, o qual ela resistiu bravamente.

            This work lasted until 20 October 1943, when Irena Sendler was arrested by the Gestapo and taken to Pawiak prison where she had her feets and legs broken by the Nazis in search of the confession on the whereabouts of the rescued children and their true identities, which she resisted bravely.

             Foi condenada à morte, e enquanto esperava pela execução, um soldado alemão levou-a para um "interrogatório adicional". Ao sair, gritou-lhe em polaco "Corra!". No dia seguinte Irena encontrou o seu nome na lista de polacos executados. Mais tarde descobriu que a instituição em que ela trabalhava havia subornado alguns alemães.

            She was sentenced to death, and while awaiting execution, a German soldier took her to a "further questioning". Upon leaving, he screamed in Polish "Run!". In The next day Irena found her name on the list of executed polish people. Later discovered that the institution where she worked had bribed some germans.

            Mais tarde, após o término da guerra, ela foi reconhecida por algumas crianças salvas por ela, e um pouco antes de sua morte, foi indicada ao Nobel da paz, mas quem ganhou foi Al Gore.

            Later, after the war, she was recognized by some of the children saved by her, and just before her death, was nominated for Nobel peace prize, but who won it was Al Gore.

            Agora nos cabe uma reflexão: O que motiva uma pessoa a colocar sua própria vida em risco para salvar desconhecidos? Com certeza não é o instinto e duvido que esteja em seu DNA.

Ryan Hreljac e a “razão de sua existência” (“reason for his existence”)

                Criei este blog de forma reativa, pois estava cansado de ver notícias que mostravam somente o lado sombrio da humanidade, pois pela minha crença pessoal, existem pessoas naturalmente boas em meio a uma maioria evidente e naturalmente propensa a maldade (conforme nos mostra a história da humanidade e em muitos casos, de nossa contemporânea vizinhança).

                I created this blog in a reactive way, because I was tired of seeing news that showed only the dark side of humanity, because in my personal belief, there are people naturally good in the midst of a most obvious and naturally prone to evil (as we shall show the history of humanity and in many cases, our contemporary neighborhood).

                No início foi fácil, pois nomes evidentes surgiam aos montes. Mas ao passar das postagens, encontrar estes abnegados se tornou uma tarefa mais árdua, mas não menos interessante.

                Então, eis que encontro o nome deste rapaz... Quase impronunciável – Ryan Hreljac – nascido em Ontário, Canadá, em 1991, e que aos 6 anos, em uma aula sobre a falta de água potável na África, soube que crianças poderiam ficar doentes e até morrer.

                Na volta pra casa, passou por uma fonte que jorrava água por horas e horas, e decidiu pedir para a mãe lhe dar US$ 70,00, que era o valor que sua professora lhe havia dito que custava cada poço aberto em território africano.

                Quando juntou os 70 dólares em troca de fazer tarefas em casa, Ryan foi com a mãe à sede da WaterCan, uma ONG que perfura poços em África, e lá descobriu que na verdade o preço de cada poço era de US$2000,00.

                Após se juntar com irmãos, amigos e vizinhos, e após horas de trabalho e venda de produtos, ele conseguiu coletar US$ 700,00, e levou esta quantia até a WaterCan, que por sua vez prometeu inteirar o que faltava.

                After joining with brothers, friends and neighbors, and after working hours and selling product, he managed to collect $ 700.00, and led to Watercan this amount, which in turn promised to complete what was missing.

                Em 1999, a WaterCan abriu o poço financiado por Ryan Hreljac, os seus irmãos, vizinhos e amigos, numa aldeia do Norte do Uganda. A água começou a jorrar perto da escola primária de Angolo. E neste mesmo ano, Ryan criou a ONG Ryan’s Well (o Poço de Ryan). E desde então mais de quinhentas mil pessoas já conseguiram acesso a água potável.

                In 1999, WaterCan opened the well funded by Ryan Hreljac, his siblings, neighbors and friends, in a village at northern of Uganda. The water began to flow near the Angolo Primary School. And in this same year, Ryan created the Ryan's Well NGO (Ryan's Well). And since then more than five hundred thousand people have gained access to potable water.

                Ryan afirmou que entendeu a razão de ter nascido quando começou toda esta história, e até hoje (19 anos) ele continua se empenhando nesta luta através da ONG. Seu exemplo foi tão contagiante que os alunos da escola de Angolo, visitado por Ryan, dedicam um bom período pós aula todas as semanas aos doentes de AIDS e idosos da região, como forma de retribuição.

                Ryan said he understood why he was born when he started this whole story, and even today (19 years) he keeps working hard in this fight through NGO. His example was so infectious that the students at Angolo school, helped by Ryan, spend a good period after class each week to AIDS patients and elderly in the region, as a form of retribution.

                Espero continuar tendo estas boas surpresas e compartilhando com vocês. E mais, fazê-los acreditar, comigo, que não podemos afirmar que o ser humano é totalmente propenso ao mal.

                I hope to continue having these good surprises and sharing with you. Plus, make you believe, as me, that we can’t affirm that every human being is prone to evil.

                Quando falamos em ajuda ao próximo, uma questão vem a nossa mente: O que motiva uma pessoa a ajudar os mais necessitados?

                When we talk about helping others, a question comes to mind: What motivates a person to help the needy?

                Será que todos nos, seres humanos, de fato ajudamos sempre de forma desinteressada?

                Do we humans ever actually help selflessly?

                Creio que, salvo aqueles que são motivados pelo dinheiro, melhora do currículo ou pela fama (ainda que eu considere válido, pois de certa forma alguém se beneficia), os verdadeiros abnegados também obtêm algo em troca, mesmo que ajam anonimamente.

                I believe that unless those who are motivated by money, improve the curriculum or the fame (although I consider valid, because somehow someone benefits), the real selfless also get something in return, even if they act anonymously.

                Falo de uma alegria inexplicável que invade a alma, uma sensação de missão cumprida, de alívio – talvez como se nos livrassem de uma dor que nos incomodava ha muito tempo. Então, seria esta uma doação “não muito desinteressada”?

                Talvez o caso que melhor ilustre este meu pensamento é o de Nicolas Wilton. Ele salvou milhares de crianças judias que seriam assassinadas pelo regime nazista na Tchecoeslovaquia, e permaneceu em silêncio por muitos anos após esta realização, até que foi “descoberto” por sua esposa...

                Perhaps the case that best illustrates my thought is the case of Nicolas Wilton. He saved thousands of Jewish children who were murdered by the Nazi regime in Czechoslovakia, and remained silent for many years after this realization until it was "discovered" by his wife ...

                Nicolas Wilton conseguiu emitir 669 documentos como este, que permitiu que estas crianças fossem a Inglaterra e salvassem suas vidas em 1938.

Claudio Pádua - O caçador que virou ecologista

                Nos meus textos sobre abnegação, sempre abordei o nome de pessoas que tinham relação direta com os seres humanos. Mas continuo considerando digno de ser lembrado como um abnegado também aquele que vira sua própria vida de cabeça pra baixo para ajudar o Meio Ambiente – e indiretamente, os seres humanos.

                In my writings on abnegation, I aways discussed the name of people who had direct relationship with humans. But I still considered worthy of being remembered as a selfless also the one who turns his life upside down to help the environment - and, indirectly, humans.

                Este é o caso do biólogo Claudio Valladares Pádua, que tinha aos 30 anos uma vida profissional promissora numa indústria farmacêutica e abandonou, passando a atuar no Pontal do Paranapanema estudando a rotina do mico-leão-preto.

                This is the case of the biologist Claudio Valladares Padua, who had, with 30 years old, a promising career in the pharmaceutical industry and left it, and began operating in the Pontal do Paranapanema jungle studying the routine of the black lion tamarin.

                Em sua adolescência, tomou gosto pelo mato por causa das caçadas. Trilhou o caminho da Administração de Empresas, virou executivo. Mas conforme ele mesmo disse: "Tinha carro esporte do ano, imóveis, investimentos, aquelas coisas todas, quando senti que não nasci para ficar sentado num escritório".

Ela segurou o orçamento da casa enquanto ele voltava a estudar – neste caso, biologia – para iniciar a grande guinada em suas vidas.

                Após conseguir um emprego de nível médio no Centro de Primatologia do Rio de Janeiro – com 1/10 do salário que ganhava em seu emprego anterior. De lá lhe enviaram para fazer um curso de aperfeiçoamento no Zoológico de Jersey, da Inglaterra e posteriormente Pádua foi fazer o mestrado na Universidade da Flórida. Em 1993 tirava o Ph.D.

                After getting a technician job in Primate Center of Rio de Janeiro - with one tenth of the salary he earned in his previous job. From there he was sent to do a refresher course at the Jersey Zoo in England and later Padua was doing a masters at the University of Florida. In 1993 he took his Ph.D.

                Importante destacar o papel de Suzana – sua esposa - em todo este processo: também num gesto de abnegação, deixou família e empresa para traz para lhe acompanhar nesta “aventura” em busca de qualificação pelo mundo. Hoje, Suzana é formada pela Universidade da Flórida e dirige o IPE (programas de educação ambiental). Foi ela que ensinou, por exemplo, a população de Teodoro Sampaio, no Pontal do Paranapanema, a conviver com o santuário ecológico da vizinhança. Ao chegar à região, ela encontrou um ambiente de indiferença e hostilidade pelas matas do Morro do Diabo. Anos depois, quando um incêndio lambeu a floresta, os moradores da cidade levantaram-se de madrugada para ajudar voluntariamente no combate ao fogo.

                Important to highlight the role of Suzanne - his wife - in all this: even in a gesture of selflessness, left family and company to accompany him in this “adventure” in search for qualification around the world. Today, Susan is a graduate of the University of Florida and directs the IPE (environmental education program).                  Quando Pádua foi nomeado para a direção da The Nature Conservancy em Washington, demitiu-se ao constatar que estava de volta preso a um gabinete. E, o que fez depois? Foi pastorear micos-leões nos confins de São Paulo e descobriu que o lugar, uma floresta do governo estadual picotada desde os anos 50 por grileiros e políticos, se transformara em front do Movimento Sem-Terra. Fez assim seu último curso, o mais difícil deles: "Aprendi que se nós, os ambientalistas, nos preocuparmos só com os animais eles vão desaparecer da face da terra. Temos de trabalhar com gente". Resultado: os assentamentos dos sem-terra no Pontal do Paranapanema agora incluem seis viveiros de mudas para reflorestamento.

                Padua then was appointed to the leadership of The Nature Conservancy in Washington, and resigned when found out that he would be attached to a back office again. And then what did he? He came back to SP state to shepherd tamarins again and found the place, a jungle state government since the 50s perforated by squatters and politicians, and found himself in front of the Landless Movement. Therefore made his last stroke, the most difficult of them: "I learned that if we, the environmentalists, we care only with the animals they will disappear from the earth. We have to work with people." Result: the settlements of the landless in the Pontal of Paranapanema now include six nurseries for reforestation.

Cristine Ottoni e a Atividade Física Inclusiva

                Cristine Ottoni and the Inclusive Physical Activity.

                A AFIN surgiu através da dissertação de conclusão do curso de Licenciatura Plena em Educação Física de Cristine Ottoni Lourenço: “A atividade física inclusiva para a pessoa portadora de deficiência mental educável”.

                The AFIN came through the dissertation completion of the course of Full Degree in Physical Education of Cristine Ottoni Lorenço: "Physical activity inclusive for educable mental deficiency people."

                Atividade Física Inclusiva – AFIN: A base do desenvolvimento motor dos deficientes é a hidroginástica. Com exercícios específicos e brincadeiras que animam os atendidos, pretende-se contribuir com a inclusão social dos atendidos.

                Inclusive Physical Activity – (AFIN in Portuguese) The basis of motor development of the disabled people is water aerobics. With specific exercises and games that motivate the children involved, it is intended to contribute to social inclusion of those attended.

                Cristine confessa que seu irmão Carlos Eduardo – Cadú - que é portador de Síndrome de Dawn, foi seu grande motivador para a realização deste projeto.

                Christine admits that his brother Carlos Eduardo – Cadú - who is the bearer of Dawn Syndrome, was his great motivator for completing this project.

                No começo, Cristine trabalhava só. Agora conta com 5 professores num espaço cedido pela Marinha brasileira – a Estação de Rádio da Marinha, na Ilha do Governador, Rio de Janeiro - e atende cerca de 400 alunos.

                At first, Christine worked alone. Now has five teachers in a space donated by the Brazilian Navy - Radio Station of the Navy, in Ilha do Governador, Rio de Janeiro - and serves about 400 students.

                O que fez nascer o projeto AFIN foi Cadú, irmão mais novo de Cristine. Os pais vivem em frente a Cristine, e ela faz questão de enfatizar o agradecimento a eles quanto aos valores que lhe passaram.

                What gave birth to the project AFIN was Cadú, the younger brother of Christine. Parents live in front of Christine, and she is keen to emphasize the thanks to them about the values that they passed to her.

                Hoje a AFIN tem uma lista de espera com mais de mil nomes cadastrados (Como nos disse Cristo em Mat 9:37  “ Na verdade, a seara é grande, mas os trabalhadores são poucos.”) e tem projeto de expansão para aulas de judô e balé aquático.

                Today AFIN has a waiting list of over a thousand names registered (As Christ told us in Matt 9:37 "In fact, the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.") And has an expansion project for judo lessons and water ballet.

                Cadú hoje tem emprego em uma multinacional – mais um exemplo de inclusão. Agradecemos a Cristine!
