História Viva – A União de 2 Pontas

“Living History” - The Union of two Tips

Again, watching the TV program "Brazilian”, by Globo TV, which airs on Thursdays after the program "The Great Family”, I surprised myself with one more person who deserves to be known by all, to be remembered as a reference in the transformation of this world to a more humane and pleasant place to live.

Her name is Roseli Bassi. She has four children and lives in Curitiba, state of Parana (south of Brasil).

What made this woman was "to join the two tips of life":

FIRST TIP: We know that there are several nursing homes around the world, where many elderly live the days they have ahead to remember their past, their life experiences. And when they leave this world, these stories, many of them beautiful, lost forever.

SECOND TIP: Children eager to hear stories, and in this case, children who are hospitalized, full of anxieties for healing, and also sheltered children.

To join these two tips, a group of volunteers visit the nursing homes and gather their stories in order to appreciate the wisdom of the elderly. Volunteers edit these stories and then tells the children, who thus alleviate their suffering and at the same time, learn to love reading. And then, in return, make a design dedicated to each storyteller - something which they do very well!

Congratulations to all the volunteers and to Roseli, in special, to this lovely project - which did an obvious thing but nobody has had the idea of institutionalizing and practice on a large scale - to unite the experience of older people with a desire to hear of the newest. And congratulations also to the TV station, which brings us this solace, in days that we ear only reports of bad things and peddling without end.

According Jurandir (Brazilian pioneer of computer science and living in a nursing home today), real change is to bring together young and old. He complains about how adults often treats them with excessive zeal, as patients ...

Ladislaus receives a visit from a child who heard his story and gave him back a drawing. As he is an artist, presented the child with toys made by himself and told him about fishing story ... It is interesting to note the attention that the boy gave to Ladislaus.
                Leve a idéia adiante!

Watching the series "Brasileiros" on TV, I could not forget to post the excellent work of this woman from Santa Catarina, daughter of jewelers and even as she defined herself  ' teeny-bopper', chose to study agronomy, and as graduate work, stayed at a small farm that a day was thriving and at this time was in decay, as well as several others in the same region.

It was when she had the idea of promoting rural tourism (as in the European model), but the idea did not take off in the beginning, because farmers were unable to finance the project.

Thaise then founded the association “ACOLHIDA NA COLÔNIA” (hosts in colonia), and through the union of farmers and their families who have already prepared to leave the field, they got funds to manage and implement the project in one of the most beautiful regions of Brazil -  the interior of Santa Catarina.

Thus, many young people and families - around 170 - remained in the region, developing agriculture and livestock organically, and in an exemplary manner, reversed a trend currently taking place in Brazil: the rural exodus.

The most interesting is to see the testimony of children and young people, when interviewed. Unlike the recent past, they no longer want to leave their land. They just want to go to the city to study and return to continue the project.

It is an example for the rest of the country and perhaps to other countries. Helping small farmers to settle in the land with dignity.

                Citizens, not customers
“We are witnessing what we call, the death of the citizen and in its place, what we have, and increasingly, is the emergence of the customer. Now nobody asks you what you think, now they ask what type of car, clothes, tie you have, how much do you gain...”

Chico Mendes and Dorothy Stang - What's in common?
Son of rubber tappers, Francisco Alves Mendes Filho was born in Xapuri, state of Acre in 1944 and only learned to read at age 20.

Desta forma, ganhou reconhecimento internacional.
He became leader of a peaceful resistance movement against local farmers who exploited labor of the people of the forest and devastated the Amazon forest in the region. Thus, he gained international recognition.
In 1975 he created the Union of Rural Workers of Brasileia, in 1977 founded the Rural Workers Union of Xapuri, and then was elected city councilman.
Fought for land against the landlords, something impossible to think of the Amazon region to the present day. Thus, came into conflict with owners of timber from plantations and cattle ranches.
At this time began to suffer death threats by farmers.

In 1985 he led the National Meeting of Rubber Tappers. Thus, the rubber tappers struggle began to gain national and international repercussions. His proposed "Union of the Forest People",  to unite the interests of Indians and rubber tappers in defense of the Amazon rainforest. His project included the creation of extractive reserves to preserve the forest and indigenous areas, and ensuring land reform to benefit the tappers.
In 1987, already transformed into a symbol of the struggle to defend the Amazon and the forest people, Chico Mendes was visited by UN members. There, inspectors saw the devastation of the forest and the expulsion of the rubber tappers, all made with money from projects funded by international banks.

Soon after, the environmentalist and union leader was invited to make these accusations in the U.S. Congress. The result of this trip to Washington was immediate: within a month, funding for the project of forest destruction have been suspended. Chico was accused by farmers in the press and politicians to undermine the "progress of Acre."
By contrast, received several awards and honors in Brazil and abroad, as one of the most prominent people in the defense of ecology.
Chico saw some of your dreams be realized: he married, had two children, saw the creation of the first extractive reserves in Acre.

Nada conseguiu.
After the expropriation of Seringal Cachoeira, porperty of Darly Alves da Silva, in Xapuri,  death threats became more frequent: Chico reported the incident to authorities, gave names and asked for police protection. He got anything.
Barely a year after his trip to the U.S. Senate, the activist had just completed 44 years when he was assassinated in front of his house. In 1990, rancher Darly Alves da Silva and his son, Derli were tried and sentenced to 19 years in prison for the death of Chico Mendes.
Now, the answer to the original question: What's common between Chico Mendes and Dorothy Stang is the selflessness to help the people of the forest, fighting to protect the environment and keep the forest standing. And the inefficiency (and non interest) from the Brazilian government to solve the problem of land conflicts and help the people of the forest to gain possession of their own lands for the extraction aware, rather than slash and burn forests for planting soybean overt and livestock, currently promoted by farmers.
May God have them and protect the next heroes

Jaume Sanllorente – Sorrisos de Bombay

Jaume Sanllorente – Mumbai  Smiles

What makes someone with perfect health, a good job and living in one of the most beautiful and interesting cities in the world drop everything to devote to next? This question is not easy to answer, but what matters is that these people exist, and how it would be good to arise every day more people like them.

I speak of Jaume Sanllorente, that after a single journey to India - and grudgingly, because what he really wanted was to go to South Africa - decided on the last day of his journey, knowing someone who was trying to do something to change the misery situation that so bothered him since he arrived there.

Thus, he consulted the Internet and learned of an orphanage with 40 children in a terrible financial situation. Jaume visited the orphanage and what he did then is what leads us to Christ's parable of the rich man who wanted to follow Him to earn the kingdom of heaven: he sold his flat in Barcelona, quit his job and moved to Bombay, where he created the NGO MUMBAI SMILES.

After about five years (we are in 2010), the orphanage in question already has around 6000 children and 340 workers. There are still around 120 nurseries in various districts of the city in order to inhibit the action of mobsters or avois children to fall into prostitution.

Besides children, Jaume extended his work for families, providing care to leprosy - still so common in India - and has struggled in training paramedics for this ex-assisted NGOs, besides having just created a news agency – MUMBAI ACTION, which aims to inform the general public the many NGOs that exist and need help and donations and constantly perform serious work in India.

Well, not enough challenges to create and maintain this project - which of course earned him much recognition - there's death threats by those who exploited children, which is why today Jaume has been with bodyguards from the streets city. But this does not hold him, because, he says, there are now more than 6,000 bodyguards who look after him, and because it's already clear to the criminals that even if he dies, the project will continue.

Now only one interesting fact: what really motivates him to do all this? Originally it was the smile of a child, and now he says he no longer knows, but it's something that drives him to continue. In summary, there is neither a traditional religious motivation behind his actions ... I suppose it is a seed that he had within himself since birth.
Por que será que ele tanto sorri? (Why is He aways smiling?)

"Nicolelis and science as an agent of economic and social transformations."

“Miguel Nicolelis graduated doctor, but started a career as a scientist in neuroscience, and is now a worldwide reference in research with neuroprosthetic (robotic arms) that are controlled by brain signals, and the goal of this research is in relatively short time, returning, in patients with some type of paraplegia, the ability to move his limbs and even return to walk.”

“Today he leads a group of researchers in the field of neuroscience at Duke University in Durham, United States, having gained worldwide notoriety and has received scientific awards in several countries and was also invited to create a Swiss research center in Neurosciences .”

“But the interesting thing was his initiative to create, along with other colleagues, an International Neuroscience Institute in Brazil, but not in São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, the main axis of economic and knowledge of the country but the city of Macaíba on the Rio Grande do Norte (brazil northeast state), one of the poorest cities in Brazil (HDI / income of only 0.636 and an illiteracy rate of 34%).”

“According to Nicolelis "... We wanted to prove that science can be an agent of economic and social transformations. The research center is the result of this ideology, and we are promoting a complete change of culture around this place."”

“In fact, despite the indifference of local politicians, in three years are already over a thousand children in a school built on an attachment to two research centers.”

“He isn’t alone on this journey. Has relied on support from the federal government, scientists like Siddhartha Ribeiro, education professionals who left their jobs in big cities of the south to join in this dream, and the support of the Edmond and Lilly Safra, Syrian Lebanese Hospital, among other institutions that have serious criteria for the distribution of resources in the country.”

“From Nicolelis journey, we see the promise of improved quality of life for persons with Physical disabilities, combined with a serious work of social inclusion unprecedented in the country.”

“Congratulations to this man. Which serves as an example for other Brazilian scientists around the world."
