Claudio Padua - The hunter-turned-ecologist
Nos meus textos sobre abnegação, sempre abordei o nome de pessoas que tinham relação direta com os seres humanos. Mas continuo considerando digno de ser lembrado como um abnegado também aquele que vira sua própria vida de cabeça pra baixo para ajudar o Meio Ambiente – e indiretamente, os seres humanos.
In my writings on abnegation, I aways discussed the name of people who had direct relationship with humans. But I still considered worthy of being remembered as a selfless also the one who turns his life upside down to help the environment - and, indirectly, humans.
Este é o caso do biólogo Claudio Valladares Pádua, que tinha aos 30 anos uma vida profissional promissora numa indústria farmacêutica e abandonou, passando a atuar no Pontal do Paranapanema estudando a rotina do mico-leão-preto.
This is the case of the biologist Claudio Valladares Padua, who had, with 30 years old, a promising career in the pharmaceutical industry and left it, and began operating in the Pontal do Paranapanema jungle studying the routine of the black lion tamarin.
Em sua adolescência, tomou gosto pelo mato por causa das caçadas. Trilhou o caminho da Administração de Empresas, virou executivo. Mas conforme ele mesmo disse: "Tinha carro esporte do ano, imóveis, investimentos, aquelas coisas todas, quando senti que não nasci para ficar sentado num escritório".
In his teenage, came to enjoy the jungle because of hunting. As adult, trod the path of Business Administration, became executive. But as he himself said: "I had sports car of the year, real estate, investments, all those things, when I felt I was not born to sit in an office."
O ano de 1977 foi o da grande virada para ele. Foi quando decidiu mudar de profissão, e para isto contou com a ajuda de sua esposa, que tinha uma firma de decoração no Rio de Janeiro. Ela segurou o orçamento da casa enquanto ele voltava a estudar – neste caso, biologia – para iniciar a grande guinada em suas vidas.
The year 1977 was the big turning point for him. That's when he decided to change profession, and he was helped by his wife, who had a decorating firm in Rio de Janeiro. She held the budget as he returned to study - in this case, biology - to start the great turning point in their lives.
Após conseguir um emprego de nível médio no Centro de Primatologia do Rio de Janeiro – com 1/10 do salário que ganhava em seu emprego anterior. De lá lhe enviaram para fazer um curso de aperfeiçoamento no Zoológico de Jersey, da Inglaterra e posteriormente Pádua foi fazer o mestrado na Universidade da Flórida. Em 1993 tirava o Ph.D.
After getting a technician job in Primate Center of Rio de Janeiro - with one tenth of the salary he earned in his previous job. From there he was sent to do a refresher course at the Jersey Zoo in England and later Padua was doing a masters at the University of Florida. In 1993 he took his Ph.D.

Importante destacar o papel de Suzana – sua esposa - em todo este processo: também num gesto de abnegação, deixou família e empresa para traz para lhe acompanhar nesta “aventura” em busca de qualificação pelo mundo. Hoje, Suzana é formada pela Universidade da Flórida e dirige o IPE (programas de educação ambiental). Foi ela que ensinou, por exemplo, a população de Teodoro Sampaio, no Pontal do Paranapanema, a conviver com o santuário ecológico da vizinhança. Ao chegar à região, ela encontrou um ambiente de indiferença e hostilidade pelas matas do Morro do Diabo. Anos depois, quando um incêndio lambeu a floresta, os moradores da cidade levantaram-se de madrugada para ajudar voluntariamente no combate ao fogo.
Important to highlight the role of Suzanne - his wife - in all this: even in a gesture of selflessness, left family and company to accompany him in this “adventure” in search for qualification around the world. Today, Susan is a graduate of the University of Florida and directs the IPE (environmental education program). It was she who taught, by example, the population of Teodoro Sampaio (Pontal do Paranapanema, SP state), to live with the wildlife sanctuary in the neighborhood. Upon arriving to the region, she found an atmosphere of indifference and hostility by the forests of Morro do Diabo. Years later, when a fire licked the forest, city dwellers rose at dawn to voluntarily assist in firefighting.
Quando Pádua foi nomeado para a direção da The Nature Conservancy em Washington, demitiu-se ao constatar que estava de volta preso a um gabinete. E, o que fez depois? Foi pastorear micos-leões nos confins de São Paulo e descobriu que o lugar, uma floresta do governo estadual picotada desde os anos 50 por grileiros e políticos, se transformara em front do Movimento Sem-Terra. Fez assim seu último curso, o mais difícil deles: "Aprendi que se nós, os ambientalistas, nos preocuparmos só com os animais eles vão desaparecer da face da terra. Temos de trabalhar com gente". Resultado: os assentamentos dos sem-terra no Pontal do Paranapanema agora incluem seis viveiros de mudas para reflorestamento.
Padua then was appointed to the leadership of The Nature Conservancy in Washington, and resigned when found out that he would be attached to a back office again. And then what did he? He came back to SP state to shepherd tamarins again and found the place, a jungle state government since the 50s perforated by squatters and politicians, and found himself in front of the Landless Movement. Therefore made his last stroke, the most difficult of them: "I learned that if we, the environmentalists, we care only with the animals they will disappear from the earth. We have to work with people." Result: the settlements of the landless in the Pontal of Paranapanema now include six nurseries for reforestation.
