Irena Sendler – O Anjo do Gueto de Varsóvia (The Angel of the Warsaw Ghetto)

            Na minha busca por abnegados, sempre me deparo com alguém que arriscou a própria vida para salvar outras vidas no período do Holocausto.

            In my quest for selfless people, I always find someone who risked his or her life to save other lives during the Holocaust.

            Irena Sendler, nascida em 1910 na Polônia, tem em sua conta mais de 2500 vidas salvas entre 1939 e 1943, quando trabalhou como enfermeira em Varsóvia, atuando diretamente nos guetos e levando medicamentos, comida, roupas e até dinheiro, contrariando o regime nazista.

            Irena Sendler, born in 1910 in Poland, has in her account more than 2500 lives saved between 1939 and 1943, when she worked as a nurse in Warsaw, acting directly in the ghettos and taking medicines, food, clothing and even money to the jewish families, against the Nazi regime.

            Mas o que mais impressiona é o risco que ela se determinou a correr quando, sabendo que mais cedo ou mais tarde, todos ali seriam incinerados, começou a tirar as crianças do local, com o consentimento dos parentes.

            But what impresses me most is the risk that she determined to run when, knowing that sooner or later, everyone there would be incinerated, she began to take local children out of the ghetto, with the consent of relatives.

            Ela tentava persuadir os pais ou avos a permitirem que ela retirasse os pequenos em ambulâncias, dizendo que eles tinham contraído tifo, e posteriormente até mesmo em sacos, cestos de lixo, caixas de ferramentas, carregamentos de mercadorias, sacas de batatas e caixões.

            She tried to persuade their parents or grandparents to allow her to withdraw them in the ambulance, saying they had contracted typhus for the nazis, and later even in bags, garbage bins, tool boxes, shipments of goods, sacks of potatoes and coffins.

            Quando os pais ou parentes não deixavam que ela os levasse para fora do gueto, por motivo óbvio, muitas vezes ela retornava para tentar persuadi-los, e constatava que todos na casa já tinham sido enviados para as câmaras de gás nos campos de extermínio.

            When parents or relatives didn’t let her take them out of the ghetto, for obvious reason, she often returned to try to persuade them, and almost always noted that everyone in the house had already been sent to the gas chambers in extermination camps.

            Para conservar o histórico familiar das crianças salvas, ela montou um arquivo para cada uma delas com nome original das crianças, nome dos pais e suas novas identidades.

            To preserve the family history of the rescued children, she set up a file for each one with the original name of children, parents' names and their new identities.

            Este trabalho durou até 20 de Outubro de 1943,quando Irena Sendler foi presa pela Gestapo e levada para a prisão de Pawiak onde teve suas pernas e pés quebrados pelos nazistas em busca da confissão sobre o paradeiro das crianças salvas e suas verdadeiras identidades, o qual ela resistiu bravamente.

            This work lasted until 20 October 1943, when Irena Sendler was arrested by the Gestapo and taken to Pawiak prison where she had her feets and legs broken by the Nazis in search of the confession on the whereabouts of the rescued children and their true identities, which she resisted bravely.

             Foi condenada à morte, e enquanto esperava pela execução, um soldado alemão levou-a para um "interrogatório adicional". Ao sair, gritou-lhe em polaco "Corra!". No dia seguinte Irena encontrou o seu nome na lista de polacos executados. Mais tarde descobriu que a instituição em que ela trabalhava havia subornado alguns alemães.

            She was sentenced to death, and while awaiting execution, a German soldier took her to a "further questioning". Upon leaving, he screamed in Polish "Run!". In The next day Irena found her name on the list of executed polish people. Later discovered that the institution where she worked had bribed some germans.

            Mais tarde, após o término da guerra, ela foi reconhecida por algumas crianças salvas por ela, e um pouco antes de sua morte, foi indicada ao Nobel da paz, mas quem ganhou foi Al Gore.

            Later, after the war, she was recognized by some of the children saved by her, and just before her death, was nominated for Nobel peace prize, but who won it was Al Gore.

            Agora nos cabe uma reflexão: O que motiva uma pessoa a colocar sua própria vida em risco para salvar desconhecidos? Com certeza não é o instinto e duvido que esteja em seu DNA.

            Now we must reflect: What motivates a person to put his / her own life in danger to save strangers? Definitely is not the instinct and I doubt that's in his / her DNA.

Usinas Nucleares e o Acidente no Japão - Nuclear Plants and the Accident in Japan.

            Não sei a quantos quilômetros vocês estão distantes de uma usina nuclear, mas depois do acidente nuclear em Fukushima, no Japão, tive a curiosidade de medir a distância entre São José dos Campos, SP, e Angra dos Reis, RJ – em linha reta – e descobri que há apenas 145km de distância de uma.

            I don’t know how many miles you are away from a nuclear plant, but after the nuclear accident in Fukushima, Japan, I had the curiosity to measure the distance between Sao Jose dos Campos, SP state, and Angra dos Reis, RJ state - straight - and found that there is only 90 miles away from one.

            Eu, como ecologista amador, sempre fui contrário a construção de usinas nucleares, por todo o inconveniente que elas criam desde sua construção, manutenção, até a sua desativação e desmantelamento, sem contar que até hoje em nenhum lugar do mundo, há algum lugar definitivo para descartar com segurança todos os resíduos que a usina gerou em todas as suas fases.

            As an amateur ecologist, I was always opposed the construction of nuclear plants, because of the inconvenience they create since its construction, maintenance, until their deactivation and decommissioning, not to mention that today, anywhere in the world, there are some definite place to safely dispose all waste that the plant generated in all its phases.

            Confesso que recentemente caí na armadilha em que caíram muitos ecologistas, de acreditar que a energia nuclear talvez seja a alternativa para se atender a cada vez maior demanda por energia elétrica em todo o mundo sem emitir tanto CO ².

            I confess that recently fell into the trap that many ecologists fell also, of believing that nuclear energy may be the alternative to meet the growing demand for electricity worldwide without emitting as much CO ².

Desastre em Fukushima (Fukushima disaster)

            Bem, este acidente ocorreu na 2ª maior economia do mundo (ou 3ª, após a China) e num país que, pelo menos na teoria, deveria ter o sistema mais seguro e controlado de geração de energia nuclear – ainda mais em se tratando de uma região instável e susceptível a terremotos e maremotos. Basta vermos o quanto eles se prepararam com relação aos constantes terremotos construindo edifícios que absorvem os choques e não colapsam.

            Well, this accident occurred in the 2nd largest economy in the world (or 3rd after China) and in a country that, at least in theory, should have the more secure and controlled nuclear power generation system - even more when it is located in an unstable region prone to earthquakes and tsunamis. Just seeing how they set about constructing buildings to constant earthquakes that absorb shocks and do not collapse.

            But now, we see them desperate trying to contain the radioactive leak, which has already been detected even in the American continent, while trying to calm the population and who knows to what extent, to disclose what is actually occurring and tell that the situation is under control...

            E o que aprendemos com a grande lição do acidente no Japão?

            Em minha opinião, construir usinas nucleares é como criar tigres em seu quintal tentando domesticá-los: Pode até funcionar, mas não vai funcionar pra sempre nem em todos os casos, e o resultado é quase sempre fatal.

            In my opinion, build nuclear power plants could be compared to create tiger in your backyard trying to tame them: It can work, but not forever nor in all cases, and the result is almost always fatal.

            Todo o problema atualmente se encontra na pressão que o aumento da demanda no mundo faz nos agentes públicos, e a tendência dos mesmos de atender prontamente sem propor ao menos uma mudança de paradigma nesta mania de esbanjar que se criou em todos os níveis da sociedade, sob pena de perder votos e afrontar poderosos empresários do setor energético.

            The whole problem now is the increase in pressure of demand in the world does in the governments, and the tendency of them to respond promptly without at least proposing a paradigm shift in this habit of squandering that has been created at all levels of society, under penalty of losing votes and confront powerful businessmen in the energy sector.

Aquecimento Global – Global Warming

                A melhor comparação que já ouvi sobre as medidas atuais para preservar a ecologia é a que nos compara a um ônibus a 100km por hora a 100 metros de uma barreira de concreto, e o motorista sugere que diminuamos a velocidade para 95km.

                The best comparison I've heard about the current measures to preserve the ecology is the one that compare us to a bus at 62 miles per hour within 328 feets of a concrete barrier and the driver suggests lowering the speed to 59 miles per hour.

Ian Stevenson, minha homenagem póstuma (posthumous tribute).

                Montreal, 31 October 1918 - Charlottesville, February 8, 2007.

                Em 1957, Ian Pretyman Stevenson se tornou chefe do departamento de psiquiatria da Universidade de Virginia e se tornou o fundador da moderna pesquisa científica a respeito da reencarnação. Ficou conhecido por recolher e analisar meticulosamente casos de crianças as quais pareciam se lembrar de vidas passadas sem o auxílio da hipnose.

                In 1957, Ian Pretyman Stevenson became head of the psychiatry department at the University of Virginia and became the founder of modern scientific research about reincarnation. He was known for meticulously collecting and analyzing cases of children which seem to remember past lives without the aid of hypnosis.

                Comecei a ler seus livros pela necessidade de encontrar um fundamento científico para um fenômeno que eu acreditava apenas por uma questão de senso de justiça – não concebia uma Justiça Divina que permitisse, por exemplo, que uma pessoa saudável nascesse em uma família abastada, crescesse e vivesse uma vida inteira como se estivesse de passeio, enquanto outra pessoa muito doente nascesse em uma favela, por exemplo, e vivesse com sua família toda uma série de privações (e tudo se resumisse em apenas UMA VIDA) - e também pela minha própria fé.

                I started reading his books by the need to find a scientific basis for a phenomenon that I believe only because a matter of sense of justice – I didn’t  conceive a Divine Justice to allow, for example, that a healthy person born into a wealthy family and grew and live a life like “a walk in the park”, while another very sick person born in a slum, for example, lived with his family a whole series of hardships (and all this succinct in only ONE LIFE) - and also by my own faith.

                Comprei inicialmente o “Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation” (Vinte Casos Sugestivos de Reencarnação, tradução livre), no qual Ian Stevenson se utiliza de uma metodologia científica muito rigorosa para estudar mais de 3000 casos em diversos países, mas neste caso isolou (1966) os 20 mais relevantes.

                I bought, at the beginning, the book "Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation", in which Ian Stevenson uses a very rigorous scientific methodology to study more than 3000 cases in several countries, but in this book he isolated (1966) the 20 most relevant cases.

                Em seguida, comprei o “Where Reincarnation and Biology Intersect (1997)” (Onde Reencarnação e Biologia se intersectam, tradução livre) que lista os casos em que crianças que nascem com marcas pelo corpo têm lembranças espontâneas de fatos que se associam as marcas em questão (tiros, ferimentos a faca, etc.), trazendo inclusive algumas marcas e laudos policiais com “causa mortis” referente à personalidade mencionada pela criança.

                Then I bought the "Where Reincarnation and Biology Intersect (1997) that lists the cases in which children are born with marks in the body and have spontaneous memories of things that they associate the marks in question (gunshots, knife wounds, etc..) bringing brands and even some police reports with causes of death, related to the personality of the child.

                O que me deixa muito contente com Ian Stevenson é o fato de ele abordar o assunto com um rigor científico totalmente imparcial e alheio a emoções. Também surpreende sua humildade em identificar em suas pesquisas uma limitação de argumento pela ausência de qualquer evidência de um processo físico, pelo qual uma personalidade poderia sobreviver à morte e se transferir para outro corpo (o que convenhamos, seria muito abstrato de se identificar).

                What makes me very happy with Ian Stevenson is the fact that he address the issue with a scientific rigor totally impartial and indifferent to emotions. Also surprising humility in his research identifying a limiting argument for the absence of any evidence of a physical process by which a personality could survive death and transfer to another body (which we agree, would be too abstract to be identified).

                Respeito qualquer opinião diferente da exposta aqui, mas para aqueles que querem adentrar a toca do coelho, estes dois livros são um bom começo.

                I respect any opinion other than exposed here, but for those who want to enter more deeply in the rabbit hole, these two books are a good start.

Ryan Hreljac e a “razão de sua existência” (“reason for his existence”)

                Criei este blog de forma reativa, pois estava cansado de ver notícias que mostravam somente o lado sombrio da humanidade, pois pela minha crença pessoal, existem pessoas naturalmente boas em meio a uma maioria evidente e naturalmente propensa a maldade (conforme nos mostra a história da humanidade e em muitos casos, de nossa contemporânea vizinhança).

                I created this blog in a reactive way, because I was tired of seeing news that showed only the dark side of humanity, because in my personal belief, there are people naturally good in the midst of a most obvious and naturally prone to evil (as we shall show the history of humanity and in many cases, our contemporary neighborhood).

                No início foi fácil, pois nomes evidentes surgiam aos montes. Mas ao passar das postagens, encontrar estes abnegados se tornou uma tarefa mais árdua, mas não menos interessante.

                At first it was easy, as evident names appeared in droves. But over the posts, find these selfless became a more arduous task, but no less interesting.

                Então, eis que encontro o nome deste rapaz... Quase impronunciável – Ryan Hreljac – nascido em Ontário, Canadá, em 1991, e que aos 6 anos, em uma aula sobre a falta de água potável na África, soube que crianças poderiam ficar doentes e até morrer.

                So here I find the name of this guy ... Almost unpronounceable - Ryan Hreljac - born in Ontario, Canada in 1991 and when he was 6 years old,  in a class about the lack of clean water in Africa, knew that children could become sick and even die.

                Na volta pra casa, passou por uma fonte que jorrava água por horas e horas, e decidiu pedir para a mãe lhe dar US$ 70,00, que era o valor que sua professora lhe havia dito que custava cada poço aberto em território africano.

                On the way back home, went through a fountain gushing water for hours and hours, and decided to ask his mother to give him $ 70.00, which was the value that his teacher had told him that each well cost in the African territory.

                Quando juntou os 70 dólares em troca de fazer tarefas em casa, Ryan foi com a mãe à sede da WaterCan, uma ONG que perfura poços em África, e lá descobriu que na verdade o preço de cada poço era de US$2000,00.

                When he joined the $ 70 in exchange for doing chores at home, Ryan was with his mother at the headquarters of Watercan, a nonprofit organization that drills wells in Africa, and there he discovered that in fact the price of each well was $ 2000.00.

                Sua mãe disse a Ryan que não teria como lhe dar este dinheiro, mas o garoto disse ao atendente que esperasse, que ele voltaria. E voltou!

                His mother said to Ryan she couldn’t  give him this money, but the boy told the dispatcher to wait, he would return. And he did!

                Após se juntar com irmãos, amigos e vizinhos, e após horas de trabalho e venda de produtos, ele conseguiu coletar US$ 700,00, e levou esta quantia até a WaterCan, que por sua vez prometeu inteirar o que faltava.

                After joining with brothers, friends and neighbors, and after working hours and selling product, he managed to collect $ 700.00, and led to Watercan this amount, which in turn promised to complete what was missing.

                Em 1999, a WaterCan abriu o poço financiado por Ryan Hreljac, os seus irmãos, vizinhos e amigos, numa aldeia do Norte do Uganda. A água começou a jorrar perto da escola primária de Angolo. E neste mesmo ano, Ryan criou a ONG Ryan’s Well (o Poço de Ryan). E desde então mais de quinhentas mil pessoas já conseguiram acesso a água potável.

                In 1999, WaterCan opened the well funded by Ryan Hreljac, his siblings, neighbors and friends, in a village at northern of Uganda. The water began to flow near the Angolo Primary School. And in this same year, Ryan created the Ryan's Well NGO (Ryan's Well). And since then more than five hundred thousand people have gained access to potable water.

                Ryan afirmou que entendeu a razão de ter nascido quando começou toda esta história, e até hoje (19 anos) ele continua se empenhando nesta luta através da ONG. Seu exemplo foi tão contagiante que os alunos da escola de Angolo, visitado por Ryan, dedicam um bom período pós aula todas as semanas aos doentes de AIDS e idosos da região, como forma de retribuição.

                Ryan said he understood why he was born when he started this whole story, and even today (19 years) he keeps working hard in this fight through NGO. His example was so infectious that the students at Angolo school, helped by Ryan, spend a good period after class each week to AIDS patients and elderly in the region, as a form of retribution.

                Espero continuar tendo estas boas surpresas e compartilhando com vocês. E mais, fazê-los acreditar, comigo, que não podemos afirmar que o ser humano é totalmente propenso ao mal.

                I hope to continue having these good surprises and sharing with you. Plus, make you believe, as me, that we can’t affirm that every human being is prone to evil.

Férias Molhadas – Wet Holiday

                Neste fim de ano de 2010 eu tinha muita expectativa de realizar alguns bons vôos – pelo menos uns três - e comecei bem, com o vôo de 1:50’ que minha esposa registrou nas fotos abaixo.

                This end of year 2010 I had high expectations to make some good flights - at least three - and started well, with a 1:50’ flight that my wife registered with the pictures below.

                Foi numa terça-feira, e quando lá chegamos não havia ninguém. Quando comecei a me preparar para o vôo, os voadores começaram a chegar. Fui então o primeiro a decolar, e logo subi e sobrevoei a rampa diversas vezes.

                It was a Tuesday, and when we got there there was nobody. When I started preparing for flight, the flyers began to arrive. Then I was the first to take off, and then went up and flew over the ramp several times.

                Quando alguns companheiros já haviam decolado, eu tive que ir até a cidade de S. Sebastião da Bela Vista para me preparar para o pouso, mas quando sobrevoava o local, peguei uma térmica que me conduziu até a rampa novamente e posteriormente, até Santa Rita do Sapucaí, onde pousei.

                While some colleagues had already taken off, I had to go to the city of St. Sebastião da Bela Vista to prepare for landing, but when flying over the place, caught a thermal that took me up the ramp and then back to Santa Rita do Sapucaí where I landed.

                O pouso foi no brejo, de bunda (muita chuva nos dias anteriores) e os dias que se sucederam já se transformaram em notícias no mundo todo: Excesso de chuvas, desastres no Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo e em Minas Gerais, onde me encontrava.

                The landing was in the swamp, with my ass (too much rain in previous days) and days that followed has turned into world headlines: Excess rainfall disaster in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais, where I was staying .

                São Sebastião da Bela Vista alagada, Santa Rita alagada, e me restou um final de férias molhado e agora que estou de volta ao trabalho, estamos ajudando os desabrigados com arrecadação.

                São Sebastião da Bela Vista flooded, Santa Rita flooded, and I left a wet end of vacation and now that I'm back to work, we are helping the homeless with storage.
