Ian Stevenson, minha homenagem póstuma (posthumous tribute).

                Montreal, 31 October 1918 - Charlottesville, February 8, 2007.

In 1957, Ian Pretyman Stevenson became head of the psychiatry department at the University of Virginia and became the founder of modern scientific research about reincarnation. He was known for meticulously collecting and analyzing cases of children which seem to remember past lives without the aid of hypnosis.

I started reading his books by the need to find a scientific basis for a phenomenon that I believe only because a matter of sense of justice – I didn’t  conceive a Divine Justice to allow, for example, that a healthy person born into a wealthy family and grew and live a life like “a walk in the park”, while another very sick person born in a slum, for example, lived with his family a whole series of hardships (and all this succinct in only ONE LIFE) - and also by my own faith.

I bought, at the beginning, the book "Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation", in which Ian Stevenson uses a very rigorous scientific methodology to study more than 3000 cases in several countries, but in this book he isolated (1966) the 20 most relevant cases.

Then I bought the "Where Reincarnation and Biology Intersect (1997) that lists the cases in which children are born with marks in the body and have spontaneous memories of things that they associate the marks in question (gunshots, knife wounds, etc..) bringing brands and even some police reports with causes of death, related to the personality of the child.

What makes me very happy with Ian Stevenson is the fact that he address the issue with a scientific rigor totally impartial and indifferent to emotions. Also surprising humility in his research identifying a limiting argument for the absence of any evidence of a physical process by which a personality could survive death and transfer to another body (which we agree, would be too abstract to be identified).

I respect any opinion other than exposed here, but for those who want to enter more deeply in the rabbit hole, these two books are a good start.

Ryan Hreljac e a “razão de sua existência” (“reason for his existence”)

I created this blog in a reactive way, because I was tired of seeing news that showed only the dark side of humanity, because in my personal belief, there are people naturally good in the midst of a most obvious and naturally prone to evil (as we shall show the history of humanity and in many cases, our contemporary neighborhood).

At first it was easy, as evident names appeared in droves. But over the posts, find these selfless became a more arduous task, but no less interesting.

So here I find the name of this guy ... Almost unpronounceable - Ryan Hreljac - born in Ontario, Canada in 1991 and when he was 6 years old,  in a class about the lack of clean water in Africa, knew that children could become sick and even die.

On the way back home, went through a fountain gushing water for hours and hours, and decided to ask his mother to give him $ 70.00, which was the value that his teacher had told him that each well cost in the African territory.

When he joined the $ 70 in exchange for doing chores at home, Ryan was with his mother at the headquarters of Watercan, a nonprofit organization that drills wells in Africa, and there he discovered that in fact the price of each well was $ 2000.00.
E voltou!

His mother said to Ryan she couldn’t  give him this money, but the boy told the dispatcher to wait, he would return. And he did!

After joining with brothers, friends and neighbors, and after working hours and selling product, he managed to collect $ 700.00, and led to Watercan this amount, which in turn promised to complete what was missing.

In 1999, WaterCan opened the well funded by Ryan Hreljac, his siblings, neighbors and friends, in a village at northern of Uganda. The water began to flow near the Angolo Primary School. And in this same year, Ryan created the Ryan's Well NGO (Ryan's Well). And since then more than five hundred thousand people have gained access to potable water.

Ryan said he understood why he was born when he started this whole story, and even today (19 years) he keeps working hard in this fight through NGO. His example was so infectious that the students at Angolo school, helped by Ryan, spend a good period after class each week to AIDS patients and elderly in the region, as a form of retribution.

I hope to continue having these good surprises and sharing with you. Plus, make you believe, as me, that we can’t affirm that every human being is prone to evil.

This end of year 2010 I had high expectations to make some good flights - at least three - and started well, with a 1:50’ flight that my wife registered with the pictures below.
Fui então o primeiro a decolar, e logo subi e sobrevoei a rampa diversas vezes.

It was a Tuesday, and when we got there there was nobody. When I started preparing for flight, the flyers began to arrive. Then I was the first to take off, and then went up and flew over the ramp several times.

While some colleagues had already taken off, I had to go to the city of St. Sebastião da Bela Vista to prepare for landing, but when flying over the place, caught a thermal that took me up the ramp and then back to Santa Rita do Sapucaí where I landed.

The landing was in the swamp, with my ass (too much rain in previous days) and days that followed has turned into world headlines: Excess rainfall disaster in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais, where I was staying .

São Sebastião da Bela Vista flooded, Santa Rita flooded, and I left a wet end of vacation and now that I'm back to work, we are helping the homeless with storage.

Aproveitando o clima de natal que está aí, vou zoar com este cara (Enjoying the atmosphere of Christmas that is there, I'll mess with this guy)

Feito... Agora me sinto mais aliviado... (Done ... Now I feel relieved ... For some time I wanted to mess with this ultimate symbol of capitalism ...)

O que é o Natal? What is Christmas?

"Christmas Song" – Jethro Tull

Once in Royal David's City stood a lonely cattle shed,
Where a mother held her baby.
You'd do well to remember the things He later said.
When you're stuffing yourselves at the Christmas parties,
you'll just laugh when I tell you to take a running jump.
You're missing the point I'm sure does not need making
that Christmas spirit is not what you drink.

So how can you laugh when your own mother's hungry,
and how can you smile when the reasons for smiling are wrong?
And if I just messed up your thoughtless pleasures,
remember, if you wish, this is just a Christmas song.

(Hey! Santa! Pass us that bottle, will you?)

Here's my thinking about Christmas

Passeio Socratico – Socratic ride (Frei Betto)

While traveling through the East, kept contact with monks in Tibet, Mongolia, Japan and China. Men were quiet, sober, collected, and at peace in their saffron robes...
Basilica Nossa Senhora Aparecida - Aparecida, SP, Brazil

On another day, I watched the movement of the Sao Paulo Airport: The waiting room was full of executives with mobile phones, worried, anxious, eating more often than they should. Surely, had taken his breakfast at home, but as the airline provided another coffee, everyone ate voraciously.

It made me think: "Which model seen by me, so far, actually produces happiness?"

E ela me respondeu: "Não. Eu só tenho aula à tarde". Comemorei: "Que bom!

Some days after, I met Daniela, 10 years old, in the elevator, at nine in the morning, and asked: "Unable to class?". And she answered: "No. I only have class in the afternoon." I celebrated, "Good! This means, then, that morning, you can play, or sleep later!...". "No," replied the girl, "I have so much to do in the morning ..."  "That so much?" I asked. "English classes, ballet, painting, pool, and began to list her program of robotic girl...
MyZeil Shopping Frankfurt, Germany (Alemanha)

Fiquei pensando: "Que pena! A Daniela não me disse: "Tenho aula de meditação".

I began to think: "What a pity! Daniela has not told me:" I have meditation class."

We see that we are building super-men and super-women, fully equipped, but emotionally childish.
Brasilia Cathedral, DF, Brazil (Oscar Nyemeyer)

A progressive city in the interior of São Paulo was in 1960, six bookstores and a fitness academy, today is sixty gyms and three bookstores!
Pavilion shopping center, Kuala Lumpur

I have nothing against the body work out ... But I worry about the disparity in relation to the spirit workout. I think great, we'll all die slender. Some have asked "What was the deceased?". And others say: "Look ... a wonder no one had cellulitis !"...
catedral de Segovia, Spain

Mas, como fica a questão da subjetividade? Da espiritualidade? Da ociosidade amorosa?

But, how is the question of subjectivity? Spirituality? Love of idleness?

Hoje, a palavra é virtualidade.

Today, the word is virtuality. Everything is virtual. Locked in his room, in Brasilia, a man can have a close friend in Tokyo, with no concern, however, to know his neighbor of building or block! Everything is virtual. We are virtual mystical, virtual religious, virtual citizens. And we are also ethically virtual...
Shopping Center Iguatemi - Fortaleza CE, Brazil

A palavra hoje é "entretenimento".

The word today is "entertainment." Sunday, then, is the national day of collective imbecilization. Idiot, the presenter; idiot, who goes there and comes on stage, idiot, who loses the afternoon on the small screen...

And how advertising cannot sell happiness, it is in the illusion that happiness is the result of the sum of pleasures: "If you take that drink, wear this shoe, wear this shirt, buy this car ... you get there! "

The problem is that, in general, "not enough"! Well, who gives so many advertisements develops in such a way, your desire, which ends in need of an analyst, or medicine. And who, by contrast, resist, increases their neurosis.

The challenge is to begin to see how good we feel to be free of all this conditioning globalizing, neoliberal, consumerist. Thus, we can live better. Furthermore, for good mental health three conditions are indispensable: friendship, self-esteem, and the absence of stress.
South Coast Plaza, California, USA

But there is a religious logical in post-modern consumerism. In the Middle Ages, cities acquired status by building a cathedral; in Brazil today, we build a shopping center. It is curious that most of Shopping Centers has stylized architectural lines of cathedrals; them, you cannot go anyway, you have to wear clothes "Sunday Mass". And in there you feel a paradise sense: no beggars, no street kids, no dirt on the sidewalks...
Catedral Burgos, Spain

You enter those cloisters hearing the sound of Gregorian postmodern: that little song we hear waiting the dentist attendance. Observe the various niches: the chapel with the venerable objects of consumption, acolytes by beautiful priestesses. Who can buy in cash, sit in the kingdom of heaven. But who can only buy through post-dated check, or credit, or even entering the "overdraft" feel in purgatory.
Strand Arcade, Sydney, Australia

Worse, those who can not buy, will certainly feel in hell...

Fortunately, all terminate in the postmodern Eucharist, united in the same table with the same juice and even McDonald's burger...
Catedral Sevilla, Spain

For all this, I usually tell the clerks that surround me at the door of the stores, that I'm just doing a "Socratic ride." And before his astonished eyes, explain: "Socrates, Greek philosopher, also liked to rest his head covering the commercial center of Athens. When salesmen like you beset him, he replied:
Shopping Center, Servia

"I'm just observing how much things exist and which I do not need to be happy!"

 (Frei Betto)
